POETIC STATEMENT

When I learned to read, I learned to be human
When I realized words can pull me through pages
I fall out of myself into something magical
Then I slide back into my body, changed
You can only truly live one life
But inside books you can live a million narratives
I used to tell my sister stories until she’d fall asleep
As a teenager the tales turned into poetry
As an adult, the poetry blossoms , sometimes into prose

My left eye shows me spots sometimes
A little rainbow cluster or black hole in my sight
Reminds me I am mortal
One day I’ll see nothing
One day I’ll be dead
One day I won’t eat or make bread!
If I die tomorrow,
What will I regret?
Nothing; I’ll be dead
But if I live tomorrow,
What will I regret?

One thing comes to mind:
An astounding lack of literature
I fill with joy as projects complete
Reading brings me contentment
But I will not be satisfied
Not until I’m dead
